  • New Taipei City Gov’t tackles north coast oil pollution

The Environmental Protection Department of the New Taipei City Government is taking action to address ongoing oil pollution on the North Coast. Citizens have reported crude oil contamination in coastal areas since December 4, possibly linked to unidentified crude oil pollution on Green Island in Taitung. The department has swiftly implemented cleanup operations, but sporadic incidents caused by ocean currents require continued efforts. Upon receiving pollution reports, the department collaborated with local fishery associations, the Inspection Office, and the Coast Guard Administration’s Coastal Patrol Squad. They transported necessary resources, such as oil-absorbent cotton pads and ropes, to polluted sites. Non-governmental units, including local business owners and volunteer groups like the Azure Alliance in Taiwan, actively participated in preventing the spread of oil pollution. A total of 58 response team members, 32 coastal patrol personnel, and numerous volunteers have been involved in the cleanup efforts.

  • CWA: Rising temperatures amid weakening cold air mass

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has announced that temperatures in Taiwan are expected to rise today due to the weakening of a cold air mass. Daytime highs will reach 22 to 25 degrees Celsius in the western part of the country and 21 to 23 degrees in the eastern regions. Rainfall will be limited, and skies will largely remain clear, with only slight scattered showers in the east. However, morning lows in the western regions and Yilan will be around 10 to 13 degrees, dropping to below 10 degrees in parts of northern Tainan and Yilan due to the influence of the continental cold air mass and radiative cooling effect. The Hualien-Taitung area should expect lows between 15 and 16 degrees, so individuals are advised to take measures to stay warm. Wind speeds may rise between 8 to 9 levels in parts of Taoyuan to Yunlin, Hengchun Peninsula, Penghu, Lanyu, and Green Island. There could be a risk of high waves along the coast of the eastern regions, Lanyu, Green Island, and Hengchun Peninsula, so residents and visitors are urged to stay vigilant if engaging in seaside activities.

  • Taiwan issues heavy rain advisory for northern cities

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued a heavy rain advisory for Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Keelung City in Taiwan, warning of potential intensive downpours throughout the evening. The northeast monsoon is causing localized heavy rainfall in coastal areas of Keelung and mountainous regions of Taipei. The strengthening of the northeast monsoon has also prompted alerts for strong gusts ranging from force 9 to 11, potentially affecting areas from Taoyuan City to Tainan City, as well as southeastern parts of the island, including Orchid Island, Green Island, and the Hengchun Peninsula. The advisory for strong winds covers an expansive area, including Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan City, the Hengchun Peninsula, Taitung County, Orchid Island, Green Island, Penghu County, and the Kinmen and Matsu region. These strong wind conditions are expected to last from the early morning of Wednesday (Dec. 20) through the evening of Friday (Dec. 22).

  • Michael Green: Taiwan’s defense commitment under scrutiny

Former Senior Director for Asian Affairs at the National Security Council and CEO of the United States Studies Centre, Michael Jonathan Green, emphasizes that Taiwan’s recent extension of military service to one year is a significant indication of its commitment to defense. Green warns that any reversal of this decision would raise concerns in both the United States and Japan. As tensions rise across the Taiwan Strait, the main concern for the U.S. is Taiwan’s vulnerability to Chinese pressure or military action. By extending military conscription, Taiwan is demonstrating its political will to counter Beijing’s intimidation. The United States, Japan, and Australia believe that Taiwan’s efforts to stabilize the situation and prevent war are commendable. Green highlights that any threat posed by China to Taiwan could jeopardize security across the entire First Island Chain, impacting nations like the US, Canada, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand. Green, who has served in the Bush Administration and was part of the U.S. bipartisan delegation that visited Taiwan in March, stresses the critical importance of Taiwan’s resolve for self-defense.
